build 2076 - v1.2.0 RC

Post by mike » Mon Feb 27, 2017 4:30 am

Hi, folks!

I think v1.2.0 is complete and almost ready to be released.
Here's the list of recent changes and fixes: The build itself:

Hello there! This is my first day with NC (oh, those memories this abbreviation brings ;)) and my first post here.

I must say, NC is quite a job well done!

However I have problem with the complex "Theme" settings.

All I want to do is to increase all the fonts to size 15 and now I need to do that in million places. Couldn't that be made a bit simpler? Thanks!
(I reverted to 1.1.5 because some of the Preferences being far less self-explanatory. Some namings were improved, indeed, to be fair.)
Total Commander (Windows 95 - Windows 7) (retired for Mac)
Nimble Commander (retired Crax, Commander One, DCommander)
Macbook 12" 2016 - macOS High Sierra

Well, it's a complex question, actually.

Basically, if you want to just change the size of filenames, it has to be done in two places - in "File Panels->Brief Mode->Text font" and in "File Panels->List Mode->Text font". This might take, say, 10 to 20 seconds.

More generally - why don't have just one single font option?
First of all, even in straightforward default Modern theme there're 3 different fonts: System-13, System-11, Menlo-13.
Secondly, before v1.2.0 I had requests to make it possible to change separately different bits of file panels UI.
So, at that moment I decided to stick with flexibility, perhaps with some penalty in form of settings' clutter.

I'd be grateful if you give some examples, and maybe suggestions?

Mike, I gave "Themes" another go and I see the reasoning behind. It's actually well organised. Kudos to Import/Export functionality.
After 24 hours with NC 1.2. I must say I find it very solid and probably I can promote it to my main file manager.

However, nothing's perfect and I found a few bugs and deficiencies that I'd classify as bugs. Here we go.

Layout Full
- Date columns in smart format only. Missing classic Date and Time.
- Extension column completely missing (this will enable easy sort by extension just by clicking on it).

Status bar
- File name display is superfluous (not needed)
- Display count and size of all / selected files
- Display used / total space on volume (graphical rendering would be a nice extra)

Favourites
- Real Favourites (used defined list) is missing (Cmd-3 is just a generated list - I do not know how)

Network drives
- Not possible to select / connect from NC (I have to connect my Synology NAS from finder and only then I can access it)

Multi rename
- Highlight (in red) of to be changed filenames is shown/not shown randomly (noticed while using [N1-9])

The above mentioned issues are the most hurting. More to follow after you pass your judgment on these.

Yes, I think it'll be added later in some form of option in Preferences.

But... Ctrl+Cmd+2? Why bother using a mouse..

It is not, there're at least these reasons to have it:
- Displayed filename and real one can be different. Status bar shows a real one.
- When symlink is focused, status bar shows it's target.
- When file panel shows the search results there might be identical filenames, and status bar shows full paths to these items so they can be distinguished.

Do you really need this information to be hanging down there all the time?
First one is done by Cmd+A, second one is done by Cmd+L.

Yes, this is a well-known issue. Will be resolved.

Same stuff, just needs to be written.

Not sure if I got this one. Red highlight indicates a collision in resulting filenames.

Nice work on this build!

I did notice an issue that makes it unusable for me at the moment. I use a MacBook pro 2016 (with Touchbar). When I click in the left pane, then quickly in the right pane or vice-versa, a lot of times NC picks this up as if I was dragging an item from left to right or it picks it up as rename on a file in the left pane. Really strange.

Not sure if this makes sense the way I explained :)

Hi, WeZzy, and welcome to the forum!
Thanks for writing about the issue.
I can reproduce the occasional in-place renaming, but not the dragging. I'm using an external trackpad though.
Does it happens in all layout modes or in some particular?
