build 1567 - new title and other stuff

Post by mike » Tue Apr 12, 2016 7:30 am

Dear friends,

It's time for some changes to finally come: title of this humble file management app will change from Files to Nimble Commander.
( not sure if it will be respectful to the classics to call it NC, but it can be very convenient at least :) )
Changes to web domain/site and other infrastructural stuff will come later on.

Migration should be smooth, just a few notes:
- BundleID will remain info.filesmanager.Files.
- Application Support path will change to Nimble Commander from Files and app will copy original settings upon first startup (source files will remain intact).

Link to the build itself: http://filesmanager.info/downloads/prev ... (1567).zip

New stuff in this build:
- some basic support for remote files editing. Now if you edit a file on FTP/SFTP/XAttr virtual file system with some associated application - NC will automatically upload changed version back. Currently there're requirements that:
a) original window must be still opened.
b) original vfs must be still opened.
c) changes to file must be made within 1 hour, after that time NC will stop monitoring it's content.
- optimizations in FindFiles results fetching. Now it can bring up to 256k items without hanging up UI completely :)
Also, I've added ^G hotkey to as alternative to double-click in results table - to close FindFiles panel and go to the result item.
Also, some UI improvements were made there, like disabling text fields while searching.
- calculating directories sizes with respect to current sorting mode (http://filesmanager.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=94).
- NC will now remember it's last window state even if that dumb "Close windows..." checkbox is On (http://filesmanager.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=95).
- anonymous usage statistics gathering was added, NC can collect and send this data if you allow to. This information can help me a lot in further development and I would be grateful if you agree.
- support for activation with external license bought outside MacAppStore, albeit web pages are not ready yet (http://filesmanager.info/forum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=53).

Feedback is welcome!

Best regards,
Mike.

Wohoo! :D Love the new name! Nimble Commander sounds so much better than Files. Also great to know you'll support non-Mac App Store activations in the future. I never liked having to keep both versions of the app on my computer. It's messy and confusing.

I've just installed the new build and it imported the settings correctly. All seems fine so far. I've left the analytics enabled.

Cheers!

I like the new name, good job. Why not changing the logo for the final 1.1.2 to something more visually appealing and distinct?

Build 1515 was very solid for me, nothing to complain. Used it every day. Looking forward to the Spotlight integration and improved temporary panel handling.

Keep up the great work, Mike.
