Why that?
How can I understand - I have a stripped-down version, or complete?

As far as i know, there are many limitations in MAS version because of Apple's application policy and sandboxing. It's better to use standalone version anyway.

My favorite theme :)
Map App Store is very crippled in terms of applications functionality, you simply can't ship a non-stripped version there (Apple themselves can, of course ).
For instance:
- why there's no admin mode in MAS? You can't use privileged helpers and/or privilege escalation in MAS apps.
- why there's no built-in terminal in MAS? You can't use even POSIX' kill() function in MAS apps.
- why there's no F1..F19 without Fn key in MAS? You can't use accessibility API in MAS apps.
And, as a cherry on the pie, MAS versions of NC have a performance penalty because of sandboxing - every filesystem access goes thru access grants checking, which can't be for free.

How to check?
Menu->Nimble Commander->Check for Updates... appears only in Non-MAS (standalone) version.

Just copy config (and current state) files from
~/Library/Containers/info.filesmanager.Files-Pro/Data/Library/Application Support/Nimble Commander Pro
to
~/Library/Application Support/Nimble Commander

Thanks!

And if I understand correctly - as a recommendation for other applications - if I have the opportunity to install the version from the developer's website - it's best to download it, instead of MAS version?

Well, it's difficult to derive some general rule here.
IMHO there are some categories, which fits MacAppStore greatly - video games for example.

There're two ways to activate a standalone version from website:
- buy NC Pro in MAS and keep it installed - standalone version checks it upon startup
- or buy a license from external registrar (FastSpring) and give it NC

In this case I assume you have a Pro version bought in MAS, so I can give you an external license - just drop me a PM with details regarding registration.
